Most sand comes in on feet, towels and beach gear, so the steps that work best happen before you open the door: rinse off outside, shake out gear, use 2 mats and leave shoes at the entry. What still gets in settles in sliding door tracks, rugs and the car, and a quick weekly clean of those spots keeps it under control.
Stop it at the door
- 2 mats. A coarse scraper mat outside and an absorbent mat inside catch most grit. Shake or vacuum them every few days
- A shoe rule. A rack or basket by the door makes it easy to leave sandals out of the living areas
- An outdoor rinse. A hose, a foot rinse bucket by the door or the shower at the beach or condo pool takes sand off before it reaches the floor
- Dry skin first. Wet sand sticks. Sand brushes off dry skin far more easily, and a little cornstarch helps
- A drop zone for gear. Shake towels, chairs and umbrellas outside, and keep beach bags in one place on a mat or in a bin, not on the sofa
Where sand collects inside
| Place | Why it matters | How to clean it |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding door tracks | Grit packs into the track and wears the rollers, so the door gets harder to slide | Vacuum with a crevice tool, loosen packed grit with an old toothbrush, vacuum again and wipe with a damp cloth |
| Rugs and carpet | Sand sinks below the pile, where you cannot see it | Vacuum slowly in 2 directions with the brush roll on. Shake small rugs outside |
| Tile and hard floors | Grit under shoes scratches the finish over time | Dust mop or vacuum before you wet mop, so you do not drag grit across the floor |
| Shower and tub | Sand rinses off after the beach and settles in the drain | Run plenty of water after a sandy shower and clear the drain strainer |
| Washing machine | Sand comes in with towels and swimsuits | Shake everything outside first, then wipe the drum and door seal after a sandy load |
| Windows and screens | Jalousie windows and older tracks hold sand and salt | Vacuum the tracks and rinse screens with fresh water, then let them dry |
Beach gear and the car
- Mesh beach bags let sand fall through before you leave the beach
- Keep a rubber mat or an old towel in the trunk and on the seats, and shake them out when you get home
- Vacuum the car floor and seat seams with a crevice tool, as sand works into fabric
- Rinse salt and sand off coolers, chairs and boards with fresh water and let them dry outside
Look after the vacuum
- Empty the bin or change the bag more often in beach season, as fine sand fills it quickly
- Clean or replace the filters as the manual says. A clogged filter cuts suction
- Check the brush roll for packed sand and hair
- A handheld vacuum by the door makes a daily pass of the entry and the door tracks quick
A simple routine
- Daily in beach season: shake the mats and vacuum the entry
- Weekly: vacuum every room, the sliding door tracks and the car
- Every few months: a deep clean of tracks, baseboards, grout and rugs, where sand and humidity build up together
